Zichan Releases Fish

"Zichan Releases Fish: Never refrain from doing a small good deed, nor commit a small evil act."

[Source] Mencius · Wan Zhang I

[Explanation] Zichan: A native of the State of Zheng during the Spring and Autumn period. His family name was Gongsun, personal name Qiao, courtesy name Zichan (also Zimei). A renowned statesman and thinker, he is often cited as an example of kindness and benevolence.

[Historical Anecdote]
During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a virtuous official in the State of Zheng named Gongsun Qiao, styled Zichan, known for his kind and compassionate nature. He frequently helped the poor and rescued people in danger, always eager to do good deeds—especially refusing to take life unnecessarily.

One day, a friend gifted Zichan several live fish. The fish were plump and would surely make a delicious meal. Zichan gratefully accepted the gift with delight and then instructed his servant: "Put these fish into the pond in the courtyard." The servant replied, "Master, these fish are a rare delicacy. If you keep them in the pond, the water isn't as clear as a mountain stream, and the fish meat will become soft and lose its flavor. You should eat them right away." Zichan smiled and said, "I'm in charge here—do as I say. How could I kill these innocent, helpless fish just to satisfy my appetite? I simply cannot bear to do such a thing." The servant had no choice but to follow the order. As he poured the fish back into the pond, watching them swim freely, diving and rising in the water, Zichan couldn't help but exclaim, "How fortunate you are! If you had been given to someone else, you would already be suffering in a boiling pot!"

[Life Reflection]
Confucius praised Zichan: "He possesses the ancient virtue of benevolence, respects his superiors, and cares deeply for the common people." Because of his wisdom and kindness, Zichan continues to be celebrated to this day. "Never refrain from doing a small good deed, nor commit a small evil act." Do not neglect a minor good simply because it seems insignificant, nor commit a minor wrong thinking it does no harm. Life is, after all, made up of countless small actions. More importantly, these small acts of kindness or cruelty can become the foundation for greater good or evil in the future. Everyone should cultivate a heart of kindness; with kindness in one's heart, life feels fulfilling. Human behavior must align with moral principles and remain true to one's conscience. This is the prerequisite for realizing one's life value and embodies a profound philosophy of life.
