Long ago, by the Daqing Stream in Taiwan, lived a young couple. The man was named Dajianya (Big Sharp Tooth), and the woman was called Shuishejie (Sister Shuishe). They made a living by fishing, and their simple life was sweet and happy.
One noon, suddenly there was a tremendous boom; the sun vanished, and the Daqing Stream turned muddy. That evening, another loud crash echoed, and the moon disappeared too. From then on, day and night by the Daqing Stream were pitch black.
Crops withered and turned yellow, and fruit trees bore no fruit. Dajianya sighed, "How can we go on living like this?" Seeing her husband so dejected, Shuishejie said, "The sun and moon must have fallen to the ground. Let's go find them and bring back the light."
So the couple took torches in hand, climbed over mountain after mountain, pushed through thick forests, and crossed countless rushing rivers...
That day, they climbed a high mountain. Finally, they saw in the distance a lake flashing bright and dark. They immediately rushed to the large lake.
Suddenly, they saw a pair of giant evil dragons swimming in the lake, playing with the sun and moon like giant water balls, swallowing and spitting them out with strange gurgling sounds.
The couple grew angrier and angrier. They decided to kill the dragons and reclaim the light. As they moved forward, they suddenly discovered a cave.
"This cave might be the dragons' home," said Dajianya. So they crawled into the cave. After walking a long way, they finally saw a light and found an old woman with kind eyes and a gentle face cooking a meal.
The couple explained their mission. The old woman greatly admired their courage and told them she had been swept into the cave by the evil dragons and was forced to cook for them every day. She also revealed that the dragons feared only the golden axe and golden scissors hidden beneath Mount Ali. After speaking, she gave them an iron shovel and a fire fork.
The couple bid farewell to the old woman. They traveled day and night to the foot of Mount Ali, digging and chiseling with all their might. Who knows how long it took, but behind them, small mountain peaks piled up from the excavated earth.
One day, a red light shone from deep within the hole—the golden axe and golden scissors had appeared! They picked them up, ran out of the cave, and rushed straight to the lake where the twin dragons lived.
At that moment, Dajianya threw the golden axe into the lake. With a thunderous "boom," the two evil dragons surged up from the bottom, churning up waves several zhang high. Shuishejie quickly threw the golden scissors into the lake. With a sharp "crack," the heads of both dragons were severed, and the sun and moon tumbled from their mouths.
Following the old woman's instructions, Dajianya and Shuishejie swallowed the dragons' eyeballs. Suddenly, they grew immensely tall and strong. They lifted the sun and moon high and hurled them back into the sky.
From then on, the sun and moon took turns shining their light, and people resumed their normal lives. But to prevent the sun and moon from falling into the lake again, the couple stood guard upright by the lakeside.
Year after year, Dajianya and Shuishejie transformed into two majestic mountains. Later generations named the lake "Sun Moon Lake" and the two mountains "Dajian Mountain" and "Shuishe Mountain."
