Action Is the Foundation of All Success

By 故事大全 | 2025-08-23 17:49:08

In 1977, Huang Doudou was born in a remote mountainous area of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. When he was in the second grade of elementary school, a cultural troupe from a local People's Liberation Army unit came to perform at his school. Huang was instantly captivated. Inwardly, he made a solemn vow: one day, he would become a dancer. To pursue this dream, at the age of 12, Huang was admitted to the Shanghai Dance School to study ethnic dance.

Huang Doudou was exceptionally short. Compared to the other dozen or so classmates who entered the school with him, he was shorter and less flexible. His classmates mocked him, saying, "With your height, dreaming of making dance a lifelong career is pure fantasy. Don't waste your energy!"

Faced with his physical limitations and peers' ridicule, Huang constantly questioned himself: "They say dance is a realm that touches the soul, not merely a visual spectacle. Does my lack of height mean I'm destined never to perform moving dances?"

No one could answer this question—only Huang Doudou himself could. Again and again, he reminded himself: "I will use action to prove everything I believe in!"

With this resolve, Huang trained even harder. In every choreography session, he didn't just strive for perfect rhythm and movements; he pursued a deeper state of merging with the work, a transcendent unity between self and art. This demanded not only solid dance technique but also profound cultural literacy. In Huang's dormitory, it was common to see him reading classical and modern masterpieces late into the night by lamplight. Gradually, his artistic skills improved significantly.

When Huang was 21, Chen Weiya, a director from China Song and Dance Ensemble, created a dance drama titled "Soul of the Terracotta Warriors" for the "Peach and Plum Cup," China's prestigious dance competition. Chen came to the Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble to audition performers. Because of his short stature, Huang wasn't even recommended by his school for the casting process. Nevertheless, Huang composed his own dance piece based on his understanding of the "Terracotta Warriors." One evening, as usual, he was rehearsing his version of "Soul of the Terracotta Warriors" in the practice room. While choreographing, he reflected on how the Terracotta Warriors were originally lonely, innocent sacrificial figures. Overcome with sorrow and indignation, Huang stamped his foot, clapped his hands, let out a long, mournful cry toward the sky, and began to move with the music. This very scene was witnessed by Chen Weiya, who had just returned from a walk. Seeing Huang's performance, Chen was deeply moved. The petite Huang Doudou somehow embodied the towering heroic spirit of the Terracotta Warriors, yet retained the grace and spirit essential to dance—qualities absent in taller, more imposing dancers. At that moment, Chen made his decision.

The next day, Chen Weiya personally selected Huang Doudou as the lead performer for "Soul of the Terracotta Warriors." When the competition began, Huang's portrayal of the "warrior" radiated extraordinary vitality and insight—harmonious with nature, desolate and profound, ever-changing. Thanks to his outstanding performance in "Soul of the Terracotta Warriors," Huang won first place in the men's classical dance category. Mr. Filippo, chairman of the internationally renowned "Prix de Lausanne" (Lausanne International Ballet Competition) and one of the competition's judges, commented passionately: "Huang Doudou dances with his soul and expresses his soul through dance. He will surely become an outstanding dancer!"

That same evening, breaking protocol, Mr. Filippo invited Huang Doudou as a guest to perform the closing act at the "Prix de Lausanne." Internationally known as the "Oscars of the dance world," the Prix de Lausanne is so exclusive that even many renowned dancers rarely get the chance to participate. "Dance offers the audience not just artistic beauty, but something that can shake every soul!" Mr. Filippo declared.

After returning to China, Huang Doudou threw himself even more intensely into rigorous training. He brought one production after another to the stage—classical dances such as "Drunk Drum"; modern dances like "Courageous Handshake" and "The Chair"; and dance dramas including "Su Wu" and "The Shining Red Star"—earning consistent acclaim both domestically and internationally. In the following years, Huang Doudou was featured prominently on the covers of both U.S. Time magazine and Dance Magazine. In 2010, at just 33 years old, Huang was elected Vice Chairman of the China Dancers Association at its Ninth National Congress.

In Huang Doudou's office hangs a calligraphy piece he wrote himself: "Ideas give birth to action; action brings results." This is not only a life philosophy but also a brilliant summary of Huang's own dance journey—Action is the foundation of all success!
